Pittsburgh, PA (March 3, 2010) - Yesterday, after a year-long selection process, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a contract with Grant Street Group to supply the County with TaxSys^®, a state-of-the-art, web-based tax collection and billing system. Miami-Dade will become the twelfth Florida County to switch to TaxSys since the system was launched in 2006. The County is replacing its internally developed system built 25 years ago.

Miami-Dade will become the twelfth Florida County to switch to TaxSys since the system was launched in 2006. The County is replacing its internally developed system built 25 years ago.

With a population of approximately 2.5 million, Miami-Dade County is the largest metropolitan area in the State of Florida, and the eighth largest county in the nation. "The Miami-Dade County contract award is a significant and strategic milestone for Grant Street," said Ian Yorty, Director of Florida Business Development for Grant Street Group. "With nearly a million parcels and over $6 billion in annual tax collections, Miami-Dade is one of the largest and most complex regional governments in the country. With the addition of Miami-Dade County, over 40% of all property taxes in the State of Florida will be collected with TaxSys," continued Mr. Yorty.

Miami-Dade’s conversion to TaxSys is scheduled to be completed by August 2011. The County selected Grant Street Group’s TaxSys application over solutions offered by Manatron, Pacific Blue Software, Sector Source LLC, and Tyler Technologies.

TaxSys offers numerous benefits to the County, including: secure access from any computer with an internet connection; an open source architecture that allows for future growth, scalability, and enhancement; comprehensive disaster recovery; and seamless integration with other County systems such as their FAMIS accounting software, property appraisal CAMA solution, GIS, code enforcement system, and the County’s web portal. George Burgess, Miami-Dade County Manager, estimates that these and other efficiencies TaxSys provides could save the County more than $2 million over the next five years.

County residents will benefit from the transition as well. TaxSys will reduce customer wait time, reduce data and information errors, and add a web site that the public can use to retrieve up-to-the-minute account information, property related reports, and submit electronic payments.

McClendon, III of Plantation, Florida, based on a jury's verdict finding both Defendants liable for defamation and tortious interference with an advantageous business relationship and awarding monetary damages to Grant Street Group. The judgment against each Defendant is $730,149.

The Plaintiff, Grant Street Group, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania filed the suit against Defendants, Lloyd McClendon and his company, Realauction.com, in May of 2006 claiming that Mr. McClendon, on behalf of Realauction.com, had sent a defamatory email about Grant Street Group to a Broward County Commissioner in 2005 with the intent of interfering with Grant Street Group's ongoing contract negotiations with the County. This, together with Defendants' other acts of tortious interference, resulted in Grant Street Group losing a contract with the County to provide internet auction services for the sale of delinquent tax certificates.

After a six-day trial in June 2009, a Broward County jury of four women and two men unanimously found both Lloyd McClendon and Realauction.com liable for defamation and tortious interference and awarded Grant Street Group damages totaling $1.46 million. This figure represents the jury's determination of the lost profits suffered by Grant Street Group as a direct result of the Defendants' improper actions.

In late September 2009, Broward County Circuit Judge Ronald J. Rothschild set aside the jury's finding that the Defendants were liable for defamation, but upheld the jury's finding that the Defendants had intentionally interfered with Grant Street Group's existing business relationship with Broward County. At a hearing on December 9th, Judge Rothschild ruled that Grant Street Group was entitled to receive judgments in the amount of $730,149 against both Mr. McClendon and Realauction.com, respectively, for a total final judgment in favor of Grant Street Group in the amount of $1.46 million. In a ruling today by Broward County Circuit Judge Dale Ross, a motion by the Defendants to alter or amend Judge Rothschild's final judgment was denied.

In 2008, Grant Street Group was awarded a contract by Broward County to conduct online tax certificate auctions, and successfully hosted the County's first online auction of delinquent tax certificates in May of 2009.

At trial, the Plaintiff was represented by its in-house General Counsel, Attorney George P. Faines of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Defendants were represented by Attorney John P. "Jack" Seiler, Mayor of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
