Today, Grant Street Group announced the introduction of PayPal as a payment method for the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ (BMV) customers. Ohio citizens can now use their PayPal accounts to pay for items such as vehicle registrations or driver license renewals using the BMV’s online services.

PayPal and other digital wallets are now essential for government entities because they provide customers with secure and flexible payment methods and a familiar online payment experience. The introduction of this new payment method through Grant Street’s PaymentExpress® software makes the Ohio BMV the first statewide motor vehicle agency to offer PayPal to its customers. Since the launch of this new service, over 20,000 payments with PayPal have been made to the BMV.

The Ohio BMV began using PaymentExpress in 2016 with the introduction of in person debit and credit card payments at 197 BMV locations. Using Grant Street Group’s payment services, Ohio became the first statewide motor vehicle agency to implement EMV (chip) card technology. Since then, the State’s partnership with Grant Street has expanded and remains focused on delivering convenience. Grant Street is also piloting a service with the Ohio BMV that simplifies in-office transactions by combining driver license workflows, signature capture, and payment processing into a single point-of-sale device.

“The addition of PayPal as a payment method marks the continued partnership between the Ohio BMV and Grant Street,” said Phil Runyard, Grant Street’s Chief Strategist for Payments. “We are committed to ongoing enhancements to our comprehensive digital payment solution for the State, with this just being the latest addition. There will be more exciting new payment service announcements from the BMV and Grant Street over the coming months.”

“Consumers are increasingly looking for fast, secure, seamless and digital ways to pay,” said PayPal VP, Global Head of Channel Partnerships, PayPal. “We’re excited to be working alongside Grant Street to support the Ohio BMV to enable Ohioans to pay with PayPal for their online transactions with the BMV.”
